“Overseas” sheds light on the issue of domestic slavery, highlighting the determination of exploited women and their strategies to face obstacles.

In the Philippines, thousands of women get deployed abroad to work as domestic workers or nannies. They frequently leave their own families and children behind, before throwing themselves into the unknown. The Filipino government encourages and promotes this practice, presenting the women working overseas as national heroes. In one of the many training centres dedicated to domestic work that can be found all over the Philippines, a group of trainees are getting ready for the great plunge into the unknown and to face both homesickness and the possible abuses lying ahead. Bordering on fiction, Overseas brings to light the question of modern servitude in our globalised world, while emphasising these women’s determination, their sisterhood, and the strategies they find to face the ordeals that await them in the near future.
