[De and Fr]

3rd event of the cycle “Expressions of Humanity – What kind of world do we want to live in” proposed by Time For Equality in collaboration with the Rotondes

Do we want to live in a world where human beings, in particular migrant women, working in our own homes, taking care of our children and elders, are exploited and even abused? What do we know about the conditions of domestic workers, not only in far away countries, but also here in Europe and in Luxembourg?

Film screening followed by a panel debate, in collaboration with the WHY Foundation and the JIF 2020 Platform.

Programme:

Screening of « Maid in Hell » a documentary by Søren Klovborg (2018, runtime : 59’, English subtitles)

Can an employment system hide a reality of torture and humiliation? “Maid in Hell” is a documentary about the 2.8 million migrant women who work as maids in the Middle East region. They are bound to their employers under a system known as “Kafala”. This system makes its illegal for maids to leave without their employers’ consent, making them vulnerable to physical, psychological and sexual abuse..

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on domestic work and the situation of domestic workers in Europe and in Luxembourg, a theme that is often invisible and underestimated.

Domestic workers comprise a significant part of the global workforce in informal employment and are among the most vulnerable groups of workers. They work for private households, often without clear terms of employment, unregistered in any book, and excluded from the scope of labour legislation. According to the International Labour Organization, there are at least 67 million domestic workers worldwide. Even though a substantial number of men work in the sector it remains a highly feminized sector: 80 per cent of all domestic workers are women. Many of them are migrant women.
