Armed Conflicts and Gender-Specific Violence – A Discussion with Dr. Monika Hauser

At a time when armed conflicts and wars are a regular feature in media reporting, we draw attention to the gender dimension and illustrate why it is important to consider this perspective. What role do women play in peacekeeping? How is rape as a weapon of war related to patriarchy? What political measures are necessary to guarantee the structural and sustainable security of all?

On November 6, CID | Fraen an Gender welcomed Dr. Monika Hauser, the founder of medica mondiale e.V., in Luxembourg. Through the work of the association medica mondiale, Dr. Monika Hauser campaigns against sexualized violence in war zones and armed conflicts and supports victims in dealing with experiences of violence and trauma. Dedicated to women’s rights and equality, she places particular emphasis on explaining the causes and consequences of sexualized war violence and illustrates how the origin of these forms of violence lies in the structural discrimination of women and girls.

Following a welcoming address by the Minister for Gender Equality and Diversity as well as the Minister of Defence, Yuriko Backes, and the Minister of Culture Eric Thill, we will discuss with Dr. Monika Hauser the connection between gender, peace, and security.

The event will be held from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the José Ensch room at Neimënster Abbey, with simultaneous interpretation available from German to English. We kindly ask you to confirm your participation by email at info@cid-fg.lu.

The event is under the patronage of the Ministry for Gender Equality and Diversity and in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, and the Institut Pierre Werner. The event is supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany Luxembourg and Neimënster Abbey.
