Imagine an oval table surrounded by powerful, wealthy people. Artificial Intelligence (AI) transforms this into: a heavy wooden table surrounded by middle-aged to older white men in suits. This example of algorithmic bias illustrates how deeply patriarchal, neocolonial, and capitalist logics are embedded in AI systems. The generated image may reflect a certain reality. But should AI depict reality in its most negative form—reproducing the status quo—or can it also be a tool for transformation?
These dynamics were at the heart of the conference “Shaping Just AI: Feminist Perspectives on Power and Technology”, held last Tuesday and organized by CID | Fraen an Gender in cooperation with the City of Luxembourg, the Ministry of Gender Equality, the Ministry for Digitalisation, WESTEM+, and the Chamber of Employees (CSL). Around 50 participants attended the event at the CSL.
The keynote speaker was Eva Gengler, a researcher at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg as part of the doctoral program Business and Human Rights. She investigates power structures in AI from an intersectional feminist perspective. She is also the CEO of enableYou and co-founder of the feminist AI community.
Gengler highlighted the dual nature of AI: while it opens many doors—including opportunities for a more feminist society—it also raises numerous critical concerns.
AI is already a reality, deeply embedded in our daily lives—whether through navigation systems, social media, or search engines. This makes it all the more important that we actively shape its development: “The question is not if, but how, for what purpose, and by whom AI is developed and deployed.” The new EU AI regulation is a first important step, “but it is not feminist—there is still a clear need for improvement.”
CID will continue to work on this topic: a book display on AI and feminism is currently featured in the CID library. Additionally, on Thursday, 3 July, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., a mini-workshop will take place for all beginners who would like to try out AI tools such as ChatGPT or Perplexity for the first time.
