The sun and her flowers by Rupi Kaur

The sun and her flowers (2017) is Rupi Kaur’s second published collection of poems, after her first bestseller milk and honey (2015).

The young Indian-Canadian poet and illustrator explores themes such as love, loss, trauma, healing, and femininity in her writings. Kaur is also very present in social media, by sharing her poets on Instagram, where she currently offers live writing workshops, free for everyone to participate.

I think that Rupi Kaur has a modern, empowering and inspiring way of using words and expressing herself. Furthermore, many of her poets are strengthened with a simplistic, nonetheless meaningful, black and white illustration. I can find myself in so many of her poems, and I can only recommend her work to anyone who enjoys exploring feminism through brutally honest poetry.

One of my favourite poem from the book is the following:

i stand

on the sacrifices

of a million women before me

thinking

what can I do

to make this mountain taller

so the women after me

can see farther
