As plants decay, they turn into coal.

Once the body of the ancient plant has been incinerated, part of it forms carbon dioxide that dissolves into the atmosphere.

Once the leaves of a tree have captured carbon dioxide from the air, it is as if the ghosts of their ancestors were coming back to inhabit them.

Tree roots along with the soil retain the deep-time memories.

Plants are in movement, migrating, evolving and adapting.

Plants are changing us in the same way we are changing them.

Plants are as much becoming human as humans are becoming plant.

So if we were to allow the weight of all temporalities – past, present and future – and of all realities – actual or virtual – to permeate our thinking, if we were to accept that everything is in constant movement, that nothing is static or stable, that everything is entangled, ceaselessly moving into new assemblages, and if we were to welcome the vegetal realm as equal, how would we understand the becomings of bodies, knowledge, landscapes, memories, sounds, territories …?

The project Woven In Vegetal Fabric: On Plant Becomings by Charles Rouleau seeks to create a forum where artists, academics, scientists and thinkers meet to ponder together on the concept of “becoming” from a phytocentric perspective, following threads to peer into into a world woven in vegetal fabric.
